Why You’re “Too Busy” for Change—and What It’s Really Costing You

I hear it all the time: “I’m so overwhelmed with work, I don’t have time to make changes right now.” If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. When you’re buried under endless to-do lists and the constant demands of your business, even the thought of changing anything feels like one more thing you don’t have time for.

But here’s the hard truth: If you don’t make the time to change now, you might be forced to later—and not on your own terms.

A few years ago, I learned this the hard way. I was on a vacation that was supposed to be a rejuvenating break from my business. But at dinner the first night, I had an emotional breakdown. I shared with my husband that I was so exhausted and miserable that I just wanted to shut my business down and walk away. I had ignored all the signs of overwhelm, thinking if I just kept pushing through, things would get better. Spoiler: They didn’t. My meltdown was the wake-up call I didn’t want but desperately needed.

The thing is, it doesn’t have to get to that point.

The Cycle of Overwhelm

When you’re overwhelmed, it feels easier to stay in motion, thinking you’ll eventually outrun the chaos. You keep telling yourself that you’ll take a break after this project or once things slow down. But here’s the reality: Overwhelm doesn’t resolve itself. And when you’re running on empty, you’re more likely to make mistakes, miss opportunities, and end up feeling even more stuck.

The longer you stay in this cycle, the more costly it becomes—not just for your business, but for your health, relationships, and overall well-being.

Choose Your Hard

Running your business the way you are now is hard. Changing the way you approach your business is also hard. The difference is that one kind of hard keeps you stuck, while the other leads to freedom.

I get it—change feels daunting, and sometimes insurmountable. But here’s the truth: You can’t outwork burnout. If you’re already feeling overwhelmed, doing more of the same won’t fix it. The only way out is to outsmart it.

Think about this: If you keep doing what you’re doing, where will you be a year from now? The same place, just more tired? Or worse, dealing with a stress-induced health issue that forces you to stop?

Now consider what could happen if you chose to pause, reassess, and make small, intentional changes. What would your business—and your life—look like then?

Hope Is Not a Strategy

We all want things to get better, but hope alone isn’t a plan. You change by doing, not by waiting for the right time or circumstances.

Start small. Look at one area of your business or life that feels most overwhelming and ask yourself:

  • What’s one thing I can delegate or let go of?
  • What boundary can I set to protect my time or energy?
  • What habit can I add or change to make my days feel more manageable?

These shifts don’t have to be massive to be meaningful. Change happens in small, steady steps.

The Cost of Staying the Same

Ignoring overwhelm doesn’t make it disappear; it compounds. The cost isn’t just in missed opportunities or declining productivity—it’s in the toll it takes on your mind, body, and spirit. When you’re burned out, creativity dries up, decisions feel heavier, and even the things you once loved can start to feel like burdens.

But here’s the good news: It doesn’t have to be this way.

When you take the time to simplify, delegate, and set boundaries, you free up energy to focus on what truly matters. You create space for creativity, clarity, and balance. And that’s when you start to feel the ease and flow you’ve been craving.

Change Happens When You Decide

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If you’re ready to break the cycle, it starts with one decision: to prioritize your well-being as much as you prioritize your work.

You deserve a business that works for you, not against you. And you deserve a life that feels balanced, fulfilling, and aligned with your values.

The question isn’t whether you have time to change. It’s whether you can afford not to.
